Nigerian Government recovers $311 million Abacha loot from US

The Nigerian government has recover $311 million former president General Sani Abacha from the United States and Jersey.

Nigeria has recovered over $311 million of the alleged stolen funds by the country’s former military ruler, General Sani Abacha, from the United States and Jersey. This was disclosed by the Attorney General’s office on Monday, April 4, 2020.

In the statement, which was signed by the Special Assistant on Media and Public relations to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Dr Umar Gwandu, Malami, he said that the amount increased significantly from about $308 million mentioned in the earlier statement to over $311 million, as a result of interest that accrued from February 3 to April 28, when the fund was transferred to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Malami pointed out that the litigation process for the return of the assets started in 2014, while the diplomatic process that led to the signing of the Asset Return Agreement began in 2018.Nigerian Government recovers $311 million Abacha loot from US

This agreement was signed on February 3 by the governments of Nigeria, the United States and the Bailiwick of Jersey. The minister noted that the agreement is based on international law and cooperation measures that set out the procedures for the repatriation, transfer, disposition and management of the assets.

It would be recalled that in March 2020, there were reports that the United States Government was stalling on the repatriation of the funds from the British Island of Jersey. This was after an agreement had been earlier signed among the three parties in February 2020 for the repatriation of the looted funds.

The agreement was signed by Mark Temple, the Solicitor General and Attorney General Designate of Jersy, Brian Benczkowski, a Deputy Assistant Attorney on behalf of the United States and Abubakar Malami, Nigeria’s Attorney General.

Nigerian presidency has shared explanation of reason why they can release funds to state to fight the Covid-19 pandemic Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina who talked on a radio programme accused some Governors of prioritizing the quest for money over the need to overcome the disease in the state.

He went on to reveal why the Federal Government provided funds to the Lagos state government to fight the outbreak of the disease in the state.

Adesina said; Why Presidency will now funds state in fighting COVID-19

“The Federal Government assisted Lagos State with N10 billion for its commitment and only because it was satisfied that the government of Lagos started on the right footing, rolling out proper plans and mobilising its fund to fight the pandemic.

“Lagos State was only scouting for technical, manpower and facility supports, not financial support.

“The Buhari government felt obliged to lend a financial hand not because it was asked to, but because it was convinced it should.”

Kano lost its first class emir

Tragedy as the new emir of Kano, Tafida Abubakar Ila, emir of Rano, has been confirmed dead after been admitted in the hospital for an unknown aliment.

Fatihu Bichi, his media aide confirmed this to TheCable, saying he died on Saturday evening.

Bichi said Abubakar fell ill on Friday and was taken to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital but was referred to Nassarawa Specialist Hospital due to lack of oxygen.

Rano is one of the emirates created by Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano, at the height of his rift with Muhammadu Sanusi, whom he eventually deposed as the emir of Kano.

The real cause of the emir’s death is unknown but it happened at a time when the state is battling unusual deaths.

Kano has been hit by a wave of deaths since it recorded its index COVID-19 case in April.

Sabitu Shuaibu, deputy coordinator of the task force on COVID-19, had reportedly said 640 persons died in the state within one week.

The spike in deaths had made many residents panic, with rumours making the rounds that they are from COVID-19 complications.

But the government dismissed the rumour, attributing the deaths to diabetes, malaria and hypertension.

President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered a two-week lockdown and a probe of the deaths.Kano lost its first class emir

The Kano state government and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) later decided on verbal autopsy to ascertain the cause of the unusual deaths.

Verbal autopsy is a method of gathering information about symptoms and circumstances that led to the death of an individual in order to determine the probable cause of death in cases where there was no medical record or formal medical attention given.

41.3 percent of those who died in Kano during this period had fever — one of the symptoms of COVID-19.

Yusuf Yau Gambo, a lecturer at the department of mathematics, Yusuf Maitama Sule University in Kano, carried out a “community-based survey on reported increased mortality in Kano state,” giving “possible explanations with data”.

Gambo, an applied mathematician and data analyst, stated that the report, which has received attention from Kano COVID-19 task force, is an attempt to provide timely intervention to understand the situation and to halt false narratives.

The survey is based on a very small sample size of 260 households from over 17 local government areas.

Nasiru Gwarzo, head of the COVID-19 task force in Kano, says there is now a high rate of community transmission of the disease in the state.

Gwarzo told the BBC Hausa that a high rate of transmission, as shown by increased testing, is currently evident when compared to the former situation.

He said unlike before, about 80 percent of the samples received from communities in the state turned out positive for COVID-19.

Kano, which recorded its first case of the disease about three weeks ago, now has 311 confirmed cases, making it the second worst-hit state.
