ATM Stand to work During lock down in Nigeria – Finance Minister

The Nigerian minister of Finance Zainab Ahmed has announced that all Bank’s ATM stand will be active in Nigeria during the lock down for 12 days and also that President Muhammadu Buhari has allowed skeletal operations in the financial system and money markets during the lockdown in Lagos, Abuja and Ogun.

In a statement on Monday titled, “Notice to affected stakeholders and general public regarding COVID-19 and restrictions in movement of persons”, bankers are expected to be handed new directives.

The minister said in light of the devastating effects of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on many countries around the world, President Muhammadu Buhari is highly applauded and appreciated for the appropriate and proactive restrictions in personal and vehicular movements.

According to her, these restrictions are critical to significantly reduce the transmission rate of the disease and make it easier for health professional to trace, test and isolate patients.ATM Stand to work During lock down in Nigeria – Finance Minister

To ensure that Nigerians can still perform online transactions and use of ATMs whilst observing these restrictions, we will like to inform the general public and all affected stakeholders that we have obtained exemptions from the President to allow very skeletal operations in the financial system and money markets in order to keep the system in light operations during the time.

“To this end, all relevant staff of affected outfits and agencies should look out for further instructions from their immediate bosses.

“We are mindful of the difficulties these restrictions would bring on ordinary Nigerians and are grateful to the President for approving these exemptions, which should help ease some of these burdens. We urge all Nigerians to be patient, cooperative and united as all hands are on deck to defeat this virus.”, the statement read in parts.

Nigerian presidency has shared explanation of reason why they can release funds to state to fight the Covid-19 pandemic Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina who talked on a radio programme accused some Governors of prioritizing the quest for money over the need to overcome the disease in the state.

He went on to reveal why the Federal Government provided funds to the Lagos state government to fight the outbreak of the disease in the state.

Adesina said; Why Presidency will now funds state in fighting COVID-19

“The Federal Government assisted Lagos State with N10 billion for its commitment and only because it was satisfied that the government of Lagos started on the right footing, rolling out proper plans and mobilising its fund to fight the pandemic.

“Lagos State was only scouting for technical, manpower and facility supports, not financial support.

“The Buhari government felt obliged to lend a financial hand not because it was asked to, but because it was convinced it should.”

Nigerian Government recovers $311 million Abacha loot from US

The Nigerian government has recover $311 million former president General Sani Abacha from the United States and Jersey.

Nigeria has recovered over $311 million of the alleged stolen funds by the country’s former military ruler, General Sani Abacha, from the United States and Jersey. This was disclosed by the Attorney General’s office on Monday, April 4, 2020.

In the statement, which was signed by the Special Assistant on Media and Public relations to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Dr Umar Gwandu, Malami, he said that the amount increased significantly from about $308 million mentioned in the earlier statement to over $311 million, as a result of interest that accrued from February 3 to April 28, when the fund was transferred to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Malami pointed out that the litigation process for the return of the assets started in 2014, while the diplomatic process that led to the signing of the Asset Return Agreement began in 2018.Nigerian Government recovers $311 million Abacha loot from US

This agreement was signed on February 3 by the governments of Nigeria, the United States and the Bailiwick of Jersey. The minister noted that the agreement is based on international law and cooperation measures that set out the procedures for the repatriation, transfer, disposition and management of the assets.

It would be recalled that in March 2020, there were reports that the United States Government was stalling on the repatriation of the funds from the British Island of Jersey. This was after an agreement had been earlier signed among the three parties in February 2020 for the repatriation of the looted funds.

The agreement was signed by Mark Temple, the Solicitor General and Attorney General Designate of Jersy, Brian Benczkowski, a Deputy Assistant Attorney on behalf of the United States and Abubakar Malami, Nigeria’s Attorney General.
